In honor of International Literacy Day, the New Mexico Coaliton for Literacy is hosting "A Celebration of Literacy". Mayor Richard Berry, Senator Dede Feldman, award-winning slam poet Hakim Bellamy, Harlan McKosato, host and producer of the syndicated radio show “Native America Calling” and members of the Fusion Theatre Company are among those that will share short readings from favorite books. Our goal is to reach out into our community and stimulate some dialog on adult literacy issues in New Mexico. 46% of New Mexico’s adults cannot read or write above the 5th grade level and we are trying to do something about it! We want people to know that we offer free, one-to-one, confidential adult literacy tutoring services.

The Buffalo Soldiers began in 1866 with freed slaves who joined the U.S. Army’s Cavalry and Infantry. They are said to have acquired their name because they fought as hard as wounded buffaloes.
