A Celebration of Literacy (Community Event)

In honor of International Literacy Day, the New Mexico Coaliton for Literacy is hosting "A Celebration of Literacy". Mayor Richard Berry, Senator Dede Feldman, award-winning slam poet Hakim Bellamy, Harlan McKosato, host and producer of the syndicated radio show “Native America Calling” and members of the Fusion Theatre Company are among those that will share short readings from favorite books. Our goal is to reach out into our community and stimulate some dialog on adult literacy issues in New Mexico. 46% of New Mexico’s adults cannot read or write above the 5th grade level and we are trying to do something about it! We want people to know that we offer free, one-to-one, confidential adult literacy tutoring services.

1st Annual Pulmonary Fibrosis Walk (Benefit)

My husband, Jaime Muñoz, was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2004 and has fought a tough battle. On August 5, 2010 he became active on the lung transplant list in Denver CO. New Mexicans every where are suffering from this unknown disease. WE NEED YOU! Join us for a 3K walk along with fun and food following to show our support in spreading the awareness. New Mexico's Buffalo Soldiers! (Community Event)

There will be a vivid presentation by Fred Hampton called "New Mexico's Buffalo Soldiers!". This is a special Chautauqua Presentation, sponsored by the New Mexico Humanities Council. The Buffalo Soldiers began in 1866 with freed slaves who joined the U.S. Army’s Cavalry and Infantry. They are said to have acquired their name because they fought as hard as wounded buffaloes. This event is free, and all are welcome. Presented by Westside Forum.
